Sir Peter Ustinov’s Legacy of Service

A life in Service, Art & Education

Sir Peter Ustinov was more than a celebrated actor, filmmaker, and writer- he was a lifelong humanitarian whose compassion still changes lives today. Appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1968, he spent the next 37 years visiting conflict zones, vaccination campaigns, and schools on every continent, lending his voice and humour to the world’s most vulnerable children

The Mission Continues — The Sir Peter Ustinov Foundation

To keep that spirit alive, Sir Peter and his son Igor Ustinov founded the Sir Peter Ustinov Foundation in 1999. The Foundation now supports more than 40 projects on four continents, funding school construction, teacher training, arts therapy, and prejudice-reduction programmes so that every child can learn in safety and dignity.

Your contribution - large or small - directly finances:

  • Classrooms & Scholarships: from STEM labs in Ethiopia to inclusive preschools in Ukraine.

  • Creative Workshops: music, drama, and art that build confidence and break down prejudice.

  • Nutrition & Healthcare: daily meals, vaccinations, and trauma counselling where public services fall short.

Academic Leadership & Global Citizenship

Sir Peter also believed passionately in higher education. He served two terms as Rector of the University of Dundee (1968-1974), giving students their first true political voice on campus.

Later, as Chancellor of Durham University (1992-2004), he championed the creation of Ustinov College, the university’s only fully postgraduate community, dedicated to intercultural dialogue and social impact.

Ustinov College now hosts scholars from more than 110 countries, running global-citizenship labs and the “Ustinov Network” of alumni working in peacebuilding and sustainable development. You can fuel scholarships, research mini-grants, and community projects

Champion of World Federalism

Beyond children and education, Sir Peter served as President of the World Federalist Movement from 1991, helping to build the NGO coalition that birthed the International Criminal Court—another testament to his conviction that justice begins with cooperation.
